Dec 9th
Gig: Tenek, Louis Gordon, Lost Controllers: The Bodega Social Club, Nottingham:
Coyote, Eionlights and myself went to this gig only really knowing about Louis Gordon's collaborations with John Foxx. At £3 we thought we couldn't go wrong and it turned out to be a great evening.
Tenek are a two piece band from Brighton made up of Geoff Pinckney and Pete Steer in a Human League/Depeche Mode/Hot Chip mode with an album out called Stateless.
We only caught the last number of Lost Controllers who are a Nottingham based act. Will have to check them out another time.
By far the best act of the night was Louis Gordon. His set was excellent. Singing and playing guitar over synth patterns he treated us to tracks about his dad seeing ufo's in 1974, Crashing Cars and Electric Shock Treatment (His latest album). His banter with the crowd remindered me of Peter Kay at times and his coat (Coat of the year 2009) gave him a slight Saun Ryder look complete with a bottle of Newcastle Brown ale his was swigging from time to time. He is from Manchester afterall.
1974 was a pivitol year for me, I left school, started work and also saw Pink Floyd (an event etched into my life experience) and lo and behold he decided to do a PF cover of Wish you were here. At times his guitar work fell into Steve Hillage territory mixed with Joy Division flavours but it was all underpinned with great electronic loops and patterns. He signed the 7" vinyl we bought and left us with a great impression.

Dec 5th
Gig: The Modfathers: The Lion, Nottingham:
With material from The Jam, Style Council and Weller himself this brought out the mods, namely Alan, Neil, Dave, Keith, Michelle etc. I also saw Paul for the first time in a few years. His first visit to Nottingham was in 1979 and he came to one of our famous Weekend Lunatic parties, something he has never forgot.

Dec 2nd
Gig: Gary Numan: Rock City, Nottingham:
The Pleasure Principle tour and one of his best performances yet. Bart, Ian, Lee Torode, Tom & Hendrix DB shared the experience.

Nov 2009

Nov 29th
Gig: Natalie Duncan & other guitarists and poets: The Chameleon, Nottingham
Sunday lunch with Sam and Alice in the company of Nick Turner and a dozen or so of his musical comrades. Natalie Duncan sounds great.

Later that night was the usual get together of the Loft DJ's spinning toons of wonder and amazement. Looking like the Loft will get my "Private club of the year" award.

Nov 28th
Gig: Scotch Chocolate, The Lion, Nottingham
Fun night with bagpipe playing metal rockers keeping us entertained with standards with Scottish twists. In the company of Keith, Michelle, Dave and our own Scottish loon, Neil.

Nov 19th
Ratt King on CD
The latest CD by Emcee Killa features a track produced by Sam Ratty: The Ratt King. All hail The Ratt King.

Nov 14th
Mixup's Party / Gig: The Chameleon, Nottingham
Thanks to all those who came and had a great time. Special mentions to those who travelled from afar: Mog, Caroline, Will, Siobhan, JJ and Graham. All the bands were great and without their talent and enthusiam it wouldn't have been a party. The Jupiter Monkeys have now evoved into Baby Godzilla and played as such. Nick Turner also chipped in with a set of smokey blues with John.

8th Nov 2009
Kraftwerk night at the Loft.
We just love that band. The regular crew of Coyote, Cellar, Styles, Eionlights & DM only played records by Kraftwerk, covers or tracks with samples in.

Earlier in the day BMS had their last rehearsal before next weeks gig.

8th Nov 2009

Another mix at G studio's with Cellar, Coyote, Styles, DM & Devast8or

Oct 2009

25th Oct 2009
Gig: Hockley Hustle
Me and Bart decided to take in some of the acts taking part in Nottinghams annual charity event (20 venues, 200 acts). It starts at midday and goes on until the early hours. We arrived at Muse to check out the Dealmaker Records roadshow as Ill Citizen gave way to Project Hip Hop. We moved on to Brownes to see Old Basford and a little of Love Ends Disaster. At the Social we saw Copy Haho preceded by a little of Cowtown. It was here that we came into contact with vinyl and we succombed immeadiatly, buying a single by Tubelord called Propeller. Each single has a completely individual sleeve, hand painted over old sleeves of other bands. Mine is old Fine Young Cannibals sleeve of their cover of "Ever Fallen in Love".

We saw one number by them and then headed for The Market Bar for some D&B provided by Mocco. We ended up at Shaws to see Beth Jeans Houghton and the Hoovers of Destiny.

Earlier in the day The Blackmarket Sound were in rehearsal again for the gig on Nov 14th.

18th Oct 2009
Licorice Soul Records are back. I'd given them up and hey ho an email appeared with a new release. More obscure Funk, Soul & Rock.

4th Oct 2009
Blackmarket Sound rehearsal
The Blackmarket Sound are going to play live at the Parallel Universe night in November so Tracey came to G studio's with saxophone to prepare for this move from the more sample based beats of earlier days to self composed pieces although it must be said that the second of our two tracks will be a live rendition of a remix of Tony Allen's Secret Agent.

3rd Oct 2009

Gig/Party: Big Bandit / Nick Turners birthday party, The Chameleon, Nottingham
To celebrate Nicks 60th he layed a great party. A chef by trade, the food was superb. A rock and roller, the music was great. I went with Ian and Jon we met many of the people responsible for Nottinghams rock scene for the last 35 years.

London visit
A week long visit to London mean't the opportunity to hit some record stores and see a few live performances.
When we (Mixup, Sam & Alice) arrived we went with Kate, Phoebe and friends to the Ealing festival and took in some blues sounds. Saw a Colombian band on Brick Lane on the sunday.
Beatles stuff: Walked the Abbey Road crossing, grafittied on the wall outside the studio, went to the beatles store, passed the site of the Apple boutique.

Visits to Rough Trade, Sister Ray, Revival, Under the Basement, Sounds that Swing and a few market stalls mean't a healthy amount of new vinyl was acquired and a few oldies thrown in too.

Below: Some new stuff - Heavy Duty Booty, Cotti, Filthy Dukes, Steppas' Delight on Soul Jazz, Boxcutter, Bangers R Mashed, Kraftwerk: What a Fest

Other slices include: Bobbiti Earhtones, Spooky Tooth, Beaver and Krause

Glastonbury 2009
Another great Glastonbury. I went with Mog, Dan, Joe, Mike, Leon, Lucy, Phil & Abi. We worked for Oxfam on the early shift so we arrived on Saturday 20th, registered and had a party. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we worked and had our own "Oxfam field" festival with drinks, sounds and the Glasto curry during whichtime Phil had arrived. My steward team were a great bunch. Cas, Rachel & Samson. Cheers.
After work on Wednesday we partyed until we passed out on a mixture of spirit cocktails.
Thursday the festival starts. So much great music. Old uns and Young uns. .........and we met lots of great people

Not forgetting.......... we jammed at Glastonbury. Backstage at the John Peel stage they have an electronic drum kit, bass and guitar set up to play on but with headphones only. Bands practice on them. They had 2, one was out in the bar area so we dutifully stepped up and the super group came together. Nobody could hear what we were doing but in the cans it sounded cool. The Strange But True Crew might play again next year. Be there or be square.

Blur were a fitting end to the festival. The tunes, the spectacle and being with your mates on a warm summers night on the Pyramid field. Great. Hillage did It's all too much & Hurdy Gurdy Man, Searching for the Spark etc. Linda Lewis was great. Easy Star All Stars were cool. Beatles songs can bring a tear to my eyes too. What a fest.

Saturday: More jamming with Fez.

Monday 25th May, 09
Gig: Kitty, Daisy and Lewis - Market Square, Nottingham -
Sam, Alice - Coop
Alice and myself saw KDL 2 years ago at Glastonbury and were very impressed.
Booting & DJing: This followed a 40 mile round trip searching for carboots with Bart. In the overall scheme of things it was an expensive and unproductive morning out but hey, we don't care. We (Bart) nearly ran over a chicken, we saw a pet goat called Bambi being taken for a walk and the usual slice of life that carboots throw up.
G studio's was the place to be the evening before with DJ's Cellar, Coyote, Eionlights and Styles producing a 4CD mix of wild and entertaining toons for a new release on Whisk.
The week leading up produced the usual amount of fantastic records from Anarchy records with to many diverse artists to name, suffice to say the decks never get a rest.

Friday 23rd May, 09
Gig: Secret Affair & Neville Staple Band featuring Pauline Black - Market Square, Nottingham
Ian, Fiona - Neil etc

15th/16th/17th/18th May, 09

DJ launch at the Loft
DJ Styles suprised us all with an impromtu set that lent itself to Radio 1 style "Getting ready to go out on a saturday night" dance mix.

Recap:
Each time I visit Belgrade I always come back with some Gypsy cdrs and dvds. Check this video of Cita and Sevcet to see the sort of thing I mean. This is "real", as they say. Sevcet plays a top keyboard solo.

Chicago visit

My recent trip to Chicago only affored me 2 hours of digging time on the day I was set to leave. If time had allowed I would have probably hit Dusty Groove, Mr Peabody, Beverly and the like but as luck would have it Vals Halla record store was about a 15 minute walk from where I was staying. Val has been working in record stores since the late 60's. A quick search through the shop gave me a few hints and then on the second run I homed in on 5 garage psych singles most at $3 a piece by the Shadows of Knight (Oh Yeah on Dunhill. No pic sleeve though), Ian Whitcomb, Underground Sunshine (Covering Birthday by the Beatles), Bubble Puppy (on International Artists), The Third Booth - I Need Love ( a garage/psych regional hit, check out here and here for the story) and 4 LP's, Rare Earth - Ecology, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express - Straight Ahead, Happening Hits 24 which is an early mfp style compilation of 60's pop and while looking through a box of "duplicates/new in items" I found a rare item. Donald Austin - Crazy Legs. Ace Funk/Soul instrumentals on Eastbound from '73 at $3.50. Review here. A great shop. Recommended
I then had 20 minutes in a nearby thrift store and found 3 LP's at a dollar each. The Greatest Hits of "Classics IV" featuring Dennis Yost who sadly past away last december doing the awesome "Spooky". I've already got it on another comp but this, an early 70's release (they were a 60's group) was snapped up instantly. I'll have to get the original 45 now. Also a Paul Revere LP and a "talkie" album by The Folktellers. Just right for using in a mix.

March 2009

20th March, 09
To much stuff
I've got so much stuff over the last month or so (Images of John Peel's CD mountain or something like that).
I can't keep up.
I can really.
Some say "how can you listen to all that stuff". It's easy. Jock Jim knows. Bart knows. Record collector dudes know. DJ's know. Happy people know.

Music isn't difficult
It's easy
Your mind is full of melody
made of many years.
It runs through your blood.
It's the soundtrack to your life.
It makes you happy, it makes you sad,
it gives you hope, it makes you glad/mad.
Play me that tune.

7th March, 09
Gig: The Wickets/The Rusty Trombones/Fez at The Maze, Nottm

Today's haul includes first CD by The Bongolian on Blow Up, 2 LCD Soundsystem promo cd's, Secret Machines promo and some Mojo & Uncut CD's at 20p most I've already got). Sometimes it's easier to buy them again rather than dig out your own collection. Straight on the player. Can always pass them on.

9th Feb, 09
In some sort of coincidence I got vinyl by 2 fave artists today that are currently the subject of attentions from "The Blackmarket Sound". 3 Beastie Boys records and 2 Kraftwerk records. We are just about to release a version of "Brr Stick Em" by the Beasties and are working on 2 tracks for a further release paying homage to Kraftwerk.
Beastie Boys - Scientists of Sound & Kraftwerk (First UK release on Vertigo of the first 2 albums but only on the "Spaceship label).
The Kraftwerk record holds some sort of bad memory for me as it was the last record I bought in 1982 before I had a large part of my collection stolen in a burglary. I got £900 compensation and back in '82 this was a fair wack so you can imagine some of the gems which went and I haven't been able to get back. All Jimi Hendrix originals on Track for instance, now worth a fortune.

Recently "Fez" have returned to a 3 piece and will play as such at the Maze on March 7th. Our last session went well with lyrics being added to Hinterland. The "Winter Album" is all but complete and new tracks are being worked on continuously.

News from The Loft. The comfy chair is up on ebay for hire, starting price 5p.
It eventually went for 10p partly because I was snoozing when time was nearly up and I fogot to put in a last minute bid.

Other nice vinyl finds recently include Cheech and Chongs Wedding Album, John Keating - Space Experience, Babe Ruths 4th album (with a version of Fistful of Dollars) and the usual smattering of dance 12"s. I downloaded Babe Ruths reunion album from 2007 which is an independent website only release. Excellent album with original lineup who produce a superb mix of rock, hip hop and some Mexican flavours with versions of Apache and The Mexican paying homage to their new found hip hop credentials. A very pleasent surprise.

(Will they ever fail?) , Dengue Fever (Cambodian style psych), Nouvelle Vague (80's Bossa Nova style), The Duke Spirit (Rocking, grungy pop grooves. Acoustic set was great also), Francisco Lopez (The most unusual gig. Electronic. No visuals at all. Complete darkness), Jupiter Monkeys (Still rocking it the best)
Next best
The Verve, Hot Chip, Model Morning, Jay Z, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Spiritualized, Gary Numan, Crackle, Wickets
Mars Bonfire, The Stranglers, The Charlatans, Roots Manuva, Metronomy, Duffy, The Singing Loins.
Many more

Albums: Holy Fuck - LP
(It came out in 2007 actually but I heard it this year so.......), Barry Adamson - Back To The Cat, The Fireman - Electric Arguments (McCartney and Youth. Paul delivers some of his best work in years), Portishead - Third, Justus Kohncke - Safe and Sound (mainly because there is a good cover of Feuerland by Michael Rother), Paul Weller - 22 Dreams, Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree..............................erm.

Single:
7" Phil Wilson: Industrial Strength EP,
10" Groove Armada - Are Friends Electric?, Lydia Lunch/Suicide - Frankie Teardrop
12" Holy Fuck - Lovely Allen
12" Mercury Rev - Remixes
(mainly because there is a track "Senses on fire: Fujiya & Miyagi in the style of Michael Rother). The rest of it is cool too.
